Radios for MAN and Mercedes trucks, buses and vans

A faulty vehicle radio does more than cause a loss of sound: in integrated systems, hands-free calling, steering wheel controls and vehicle-specific audio functions may also stop working. However, repeated restarting, poor reception or a discharged vehicle battery do not automatically mean the radio needs replacing. First check the power supply circuits, antenna installation and communication with other electronic modules.

Compatibility, supply voltage and installation type

Always select radios and associated connection components using the vehicle’s chassis number. A visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the original part number, equipment codes and any previous modifications. On MAN TGX with XL, XLX and XXL cabs, MAN TG3 TGX with GN, GM and GX cabs, and Mercedes Actros with Lang StreamSpace or Lang GigaSpace, dashboard integration and electrical connections vary according to year of manufacture and equipment specification.

These checks also apply to trucks such as MAN TGS, MAN TGM, MAN TGL, Mercedes Arocs, Mercedes Atego and Mercedes Antos. For buses such as MAN Lion’s City, MAN Lion’s Coach, Mercedes Citaro and Mercedes Tourismo, and vans such as Mercedes Vito and Mercedes Citan, the radio version and connection components must likewise be selected according to the chassis number and equipment specification.

Distinguish between conventional radio receivers, units with DAB+ (Digital Audio Broadcasting Plus) and integrated multimedia units. Check the rated supply voltage: a 24 V vehicle electrical system in trucks and buses does not mean the radio runs directly on 24 V. Some installations use a 12 V unit with a voltage converter. For vans such as MAN TGE and Mercedes Sprinter, the actual connection must also be verified.

Compare installation height, mounting depth, connector pin assignments, antenna connections and permissible speaker impedance. A 4-ohm load is common, but not universal. Also check external amplifiers, the active antenna power supply and the connection to CAN (Controller Area Network). In buses, the radio may work with a separate passenger audio amplifier or public address system; these signal interfaces are not necessarily interchangeable.

Targeted diagnosis of common faults

Vibration causes loose contacts and cracked solder joints. Moisture leads to corrosion at antenna bases and connectors; heat and blocked ventilation can cause output amplifiers to shut down. Loss of stored settings often indicates a missing permanent power supply. A whine that varies with engine speed calls for investigation of earth connections, cable routing and alternator ripple voltage.

  1. Check the fuses and use a digital multimeter to measure the permanent supply, any switched supply and earth at the radio connector. Take measurements both when switching on and during engine cranking; compare voltage drops with the unit’s permissible supply voltage range.
  2. Measure the voltage drop across the earth lead and positive supply lead under load. A continuity test alone may not adequately reveal contact resistance. If a voltage converter is fitted, also check it under load.
  3. If reception is poor, check the coaxial cable, shielding and antenna base. Measure the antenna supply voltage according to the wiring diagram and test with a suitable, known-good antenna. Only measure resistance with the power off and the components disconnected.
  4. If sound cuts out, check the disconnected speaker circuits for open circuits and short circuits to earth. The measured DC resistance is not the same as the nominal impedance. Do not simply connect speaker negative leads to the vehicle earth.
  5. For integrated units, read fault codes and network status using suitable diagnostic equipment. If the battery is draining, use a current clamp to check whether the installation actually returns to its quiescent current level after the specified sleep delay.
Replacement without recurring faults

Before removal, record the settings, security codes and configuration. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure for disconnecting the power and check whether a replacement unit requires coding, component protection release or pairing with the vehicle. Use suitable wiring adapters without improvised power supply bridges; incorrect connections can cause loss of stored settings or continuous current draw.

Repair damaged connectors, secure cables against chafing and maintain the specified ventilation clearance. After installation, test reception, all audio channels, calling functions, steering wheel controls and shutdown behaviour. Then check the quiescent current again to ensure that a successful audio test does not conceal an underlying battery drain issue.
