Exhaust throttle

Exhaust brake valves restrict exhaust gas flow in a controlled manner during engine braking. The resulting exhaust back pressure increases the engine's pumping work, helping to slow the vehicle. A valve that does not close sufficiently reduces braking performance; one that remains partially closed causes power loss and increased thermal loading when the engine is driving the vehicle. Do not confuse these exhaust brake valves with compression-release brake components in the cylinder head: the two systems can work together, but require different diagnostic procedures.

Always identify exhaust brake valves using the vehicle's chassis number. Visual comparison or selection based solely on the model name is never sufficient. Also check the original part number, engine variant, emissions class and installed engine brake configuration. For example, on MAN TGA, TGS and TGX models with D20 or D26 engines and Mercedes Atego models with OM 904 or OM 906 engines, the design and control system vary according to the year of manufacture and equipment fitted. The exact powertrain must also be checked on buses. Vans do not necessarily have a separate exhaust brake valve; first verify whether one is actually fitted.

Distinguish between complete valve housings with butterfly valves and separate actuating cylinders, lever assemblies and electropneumatic control valves. Depending on the application, actuation is pneumatic or electric. Selection parameters include bore diameter, flange geometry, installed length, direction of rotation, opening angle, actuator travel and any position feedback. Heat-resistant cast iron housings and steel valve discs are used, but the specified material configuration remains the deciding factor. Shaft play, thermal expansion clearance, permissible exhaust back pressure and actuator operating pressure are specific to each variant: use only the manufacturer's data for these parameters.

Soot deposits and corrosion can cause the valve shaft to seize. Worn bushes cause play, rattling noises and exhaust gas leakage along the shaft. Other faults include split actuator diaphragms, leaking compressed air lines, worn pivot points and incorrect position signals. However, reduced engine braking performance does not automatically mean that the valve housing is faulty: a missing enable signal from the engine management system can cause the same symptom.

1. Check the reported fault and control signals. Read fault codes and live data from the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). Compare the engine brake request, enabling conditions and, where available, the requested and measured valve positions during an actuation test.
2. Inspect the mechanical parts. Allow the exhaust system to cool and secure the vehicle against unintended operation. Check rods, return springs and stops. Assess the valve's full range of movement in accordance with the workshop procedure; measure radial shaft play with a dial indicator where a manufacturer's tolerance is available.
3. Measure the actuator supply. On pneumatic versions, use a suitable pressure gauge to take measurements at the actuating cylinder during both application and release. Check pressure build-up, venting and leakage using a leak detection solution. On electric actuators, measure the supply voltage and voltage drop under load.
4. Check the exhaust back pressure. Use the specified measuring point and a heat-resistant measuring setup. Compare readings at the specified engine speed and load with the manufacturer's limits. If the pressure remains high with the valve fully open, also investigate blockages further downstream in the exhaust system.

Only clean off soot deposits if the manufacturer permits this and the valve shaft, bushes and valve disc are undamaged. Replace the relevant assembly if there is excessive play, cracking or deformation. A new actuator will not remedy a seized valve shaft; first rectify the identified cause.

Depressurise the relevant actuator line before removal. Fit suitable new seals, align the exhaust connections without mechanical stress and observe the specified tightening torques. Do not adjust factory-set stops to obtain additional braking force: excessive back pressure can cause engine damage. Carry out a basic setting procedure if specified. Then check for leaks, full return to the open position and engine brake operation during a safe functional test.
